Virginia Tire & Auto of Herndon/Reston offers a FREE visual brake inspection that includes a brake fluid test and inspecting the brake components that are visible while the vehicle is stationary, without removing wheels. Then our expert technicians are equipped to perform any brake service or repair, including installing new brake pads and new rotors.
Types of Brake Service & Repair
Your vehicle’s brakes use a hydraulic system to multiply the force of your foot on the brake pedal into enough force to stop the car. Depending on the model of your car, you will either have a disc or drum braking system.
A disc braking system squeezes the brake pads against the brake disc (brake rotor) to stop the car. If your car has drum brakes, it uses brake shoes to push out against a brake drum and stop the car. Modern cars usually have disc brakes on both axles or disc brakes on the front axle and drum brakes on the rear.
Virginia Tire & Auto offers two main types of brake service:
1. Brake Pad & Rotor Replacement
Our most complete brake service involves fully replacing your vehicle’s brake pads and rotors. Replacing both components together ensures long-term brake performance and reduces road noise. Some vehicle manufacturers require that you replace the rotors every time you replace the pads.
2. Brake Pad Replacement
Are your brakes squealing? It’s probably time to replace your brake pads. You should replace your brake pads every 20,000–70,000 miles. Worn brake pads aren’t just annoying to listen to; they limit stopping power and can damage the brake rotors. For optimum brake performance and safety, we recommend replacing the rotors every time you get new pads.
Note: Some shops offer rotor resurfacing but we do not recommend that as a service because resurfaced rotors wear down your brake pads faster and warp easily. Plus, they can only be resurfaced once, so you’ll be back in the shop for all new brakes soon.
