The Importance of Oil Changes

Oil is the lifeblood of your car. Oil lubricates, cools and cleans the moving parts of your vehicle. Without oil, your car would not run.

Over time, oil becomes less effective due to exposure to air, heat and moisture. And the engine may consume (burn) oil, causing the oil level to drop below the recommended level. Regular oil changes will help keep your car in tip-top shape and prevent your engine from becoming damaged. Plus, we provide a full-service oil change that includes complimentary fluid top-offs, windshield cleaning, a comprehensive vehicle inspection and more to ensure every component of your vehicle is in working order.

We recommend checking your oil monthly, especially if you suspect that your vehicle may be burning oil. Feel free to drop by anytime between oil changes to have our service team check your engine oil level and condition.

Types of Motor Oil

Conventional Oil
Conventional motor oil is refined from naturally occurring crude oil that’s pulled from the ground and combined with additives that help protect the engine. It is the cheapest engine oil option but doesn’t offer the same amount of engine protection and performance as synthetic oil.

Full Synthetic Oil
Synthetic motor oils have higher purity and quality than conventional mineral oils, making them the best choice for the high performance demands of modern engines. Using full synthetic oil will help reduce engine wear and extend engine life. At Virginia Tire & Auto, we offer two full synthetic motor oils: Havoline Pro-DS and Mobil 1.

Synthetic Blend Oil
A synthetic blend oil is made of both conventional and synthetic oil. Many modern vehicles require a synthetic blend or full synthetic oil. This information is available in your owner’s manual, and we can also look up your vehicle’s specific requirements in our system. We are proud to use Chevron Supreme synthetic blend motor oil.

High-Mileage Oil
High-mileage oil is specially formulated for vehicles with more than 75,000 miles. It has special additives that help prevent oil burn-off and oil leaks that often occur in older engines.

We can perform an oil change for any vehicle make and model, including Nissan, Toyota, BMW, Jeep, GMC and Honda oil changes!

What kind of oil does my car need?

At Virginia Tire & Auto, we offer synthetic blend and full synthetic oils. Consult your car’s owner’s manual and talk to one of our technicians to find out which is the best type of oil for your car.

Compared to conventional mineral oil, synthetic oil:

Offers powerful protection against engine wear.

Oil acts as a barrier between all the moving parts of your engine. Over time, the oil deteriorates and no longer protects the engine from wear and tear. Synthetic oils retain their wear protection properties much longer, keeping your engine in better condition.

Keeps your engine cleaner.

Synthetic oils have fewer impurities compared to other oils. This helps prevent the formation of sludge and deposits in your engine.

Runs better in colder temperatures.

When the ignition starts, it can take a little while for the motor oil to start flowing, especially in colder weather. Synthetic oils, however, flow quickly even at low temperatures and start protecting the engine right after your car starts.

Protects better in warmer temperatures.

Hot temperatures can cause conventional oil to break down quickly. But synthetic oils resist high temperatures better, providing better protection against high engine temperatures.

How often should I get an oil change?

We recommend following the car manufacturer’s recommended oil change interval, which can be found in your owner’s manual. If the vehicle is equipped with an oil life monitoring system, the system will notify you when you need an oil change.

Most modern vehicles regularly go 5,000–10,000 miles or 6 months between oil changes.

After you receive an oil change service at Virginia Tire & Auto, we make a note in our database of what type of oil your car’s manufacturer recommends and how often it needs to be changed. Then, every time you come in for an oil change, we put a sticker in your window to remind you of when to stop by for your next oil change.

How long does an oil change take?

From start to finish, our full-service oil change service takes just 30-45 minutes to complete.

Running short on time? Call ahead for the current estimated wait time. On busy days, you may have to wait a little bit longer for a bay to become available.

How do my driving habits affect how often I need an oil change?

You may have heard the term “severe driving” and assume it refers mainly to ice road truckers. Not true! Many of us have severe driving habits, and, in these cases, our mechanics recommend following a severe oil change schedule to protect our car.

Ask yourself:

  1. Does your daily commute include a lot of stop-and-go action?
  2. Do you use your vehicle to haul heavy loads regularly?
  3. Do you take a lot of short trips in your car (10 miles or less)?
  4. Do you regularly drive on rough roads, dirt roads, muddy roads or salt-covered roads?
  5. Do you spend a lot of time idling or driving at a low speed?

If you answered yes to any one of the above questions, then you should follow your manufacturer’s severe oil change service schedule.

Can I bring my own oil to use?

Virginia Tire & Auto does not accept customer-supplied oil or filter for oil changes.  We stand behind our service and would not be able to provide our service warranty for lube, oil & filter changes (90 days or 4,000 miles) with parts that we do not supply, as these parts that may be incorrect for the vehicle or may be faulty.
