Wheel Balancing

Wheel balancing refers to an adjustment of any weight imbalances in a wheel. Out-of-balance wheels cause a shaky ride and increase the wear and tear on your tires, struts and shocks, leading to unnecessary repairs.

Standard Balance

A standard tire balance addresses up-and-down imbalances and is recommended every 15,000 miles. Your local Virginia Tire & Auto will use a special tire balancing machine that spins the tire at high speeds to determine where there are imbalances.

It includes:

  • Dismounting the wheel from the vehicle
  • Using the balancing machine to determine imbalances
  • Placing wheel weights
  • Re-mounting the wheel to the vehicle
  • Tire pressure adjustment
  • Courtesy vehicle inspection

  • Ideal for tires experiencing vibration or shaking that cannot be fixed by a standard wheel balance
  • Includes a full report showing the before-and-after results and a road test for quality control
  • As long as the wheel assembly is not damaged, a Road Force Balance is guaranteed to last for the life of the tire

What causes imbalances in a tire?

Common causes include:

  • Normal tire wear and imperfections
  • Worn out suspension parts
  • Sudden impacts (hitting a curb, fender bender)

What are the signs that my wheels need to be balanced?

An out-of-balance wheel creates vibrations that increase as the vehicle speeds up. If you feel the vibration mostly in the steering wheel, the problem is most likely in a front wheel. If the vibration is mostly felt in the seat, the problem is probably in a rear wheel.

Another sign that you need to have your tires balanced is irregular tread wear patterns. However, this can also be an indicator of other tire issues, such as misalignment. Ask one of our tire techs to verify what service your vehicle needs prior to service.

How often do I need to get my wheels balanced?

We recommend getting a standard wheel balance every 12,000–15,000 miles or once a year. A Road Force Balance should last the life of the tire.

That said, it’s always a good idea to check the owner’s manual for the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation as well as your tire warranty. Your tire warranty may require routine tire balancing to remain valid.

You should also get your wheels balanced every time you install new tires. We provide Tire Mounting & Balancing and Lifetime Wheel Balances with every tire purchase as part of our tires& package.

How long does it take to get my wheels balanced?

A standalone wheel balancing service typically takes 15-20 minutes to complete.
