New Brake Pad & Rotor Replacement

Squealing brakes? That most likely means that it’s time to replace your brake pads/shoes. Brake pads usually need to be replaced every 30,000–70,000 miles. If you let them wear down too much, they will damage your rotors.

Our most complete brake service involves fully replacing your vehicle’s brake pads and rotors. Depending on the type of vehicle you have, the vehicle manufacturer may require that you replace the rotors every time you replace the pads. To maintain safety and comfort, we suggest replacing both components for optimal brake performance and to prevent uneven, premature wear on your new brake pads.

*Prices are per axle and do not include taxes or shop supply charge. Pricing for European cars, light trucks & heavy-duty trucks is determined upon inspection. Cars with electronic braking systems require an additional half hour of labor.

What are the signs that I need new brakes?

  • Squeaking or grinding
  • Vibration or shaking when braking
  • Longer stopping distances
  • Pulling to one side while braking
  • Illuminated dashboard light
  • “Spongy” brake pedal
  • Shaking steering wheel

How often do I need to get new brakes?

Typically, brakes should be replaced every 20,000–60,000 miles. Factors such as your vehicle size, driving style and brake quality contribute to the lifetime of your brakes.

If you are unsure whether your vehicle needs new brakes or brake repair, drop by for a free brake inspection.

Can I just replace the brake pads?

To prevent uneven, premature wear on your new brake pads, we recommend resurfacing or replacing the rotors every time you get new pads.

Can I get my rotors resurfaced?

Resurfacing (also called “turning “or “machining”) your brake rotors means grinding a thin layer off of the brake rotors. This service intends to remove any grooves, pits or wear patterns in the rotor, ideally extending its usable life.

However, if the rotors are damaged or too thin to resurface, you will have to get new rotors. Most European vehicles always require new rotors because their rotors are made from a softer metal. By the time the brake pads wear down, the rotors are already below the minimum acceptable thickness.

Although many places offer this service, we do not offer it, and we recommend against it altogether since it will probably result in a visit to the shop sooner than you expect. For optimum performance and safety, we always recommend replacing your brake rotors when replacing the brake pads.

How often should I change my brake fluid?

Your car’s brake fluid is checked each year as part of the Virginia State Safety Inspection.

Brake fluid should be changed every 2 years or 45,000 miles or however often the owner’s manual recommends.
