Diagnosing Air Conditioner (A/C) Problems

Hi! I’m Mike Bowden, service manager from Virginia Tire and Auto One Loudoun and with the summer season looming, we can help our customers with their air conditioning concerns by answering one simple but crucial question: Does the A/C not blow air at all or does it not blow cold air?

If it doesn’t blow air at all, the first step is an a/c system diagnostic focusing on things like the blower, motor, resistor, compressor etc. to look for any mechanical or electrical problems.

If it doesn’t blow cold air, the first step in the diagnostic process is an evacuate and recharge. Now let me tell you a little bit about how that works.

During the evacuate and recharge process, we use a machine much like this to evacuate or remove all of the existing Freon from the system.

The second step recharges it to the proper level. This allows us to compare how much came out versus how much went in. When we recharge the system, we use a UV reactive leak detection dye that we inject into the system to make it easier to identify these potential leaks.

Remember, the HVAC system is sealed. If the refrigerant level is low, that definitely indicates a leak. Often times these leaks can be small and hard to identify right away.

Once the leaks are identified and the repairs are performed, the last step is to recharge the A/C to the proper refrigerant level to make sure everything is blowing ice-cold for you.

As always, our repairs are backed by a 2 year, 24,000 mile warranty that’s valid at all 13 of our locations. If you’re experiencing any of these issues don’t hesitate to contact us at, where you can schedule an appointment at your most convenient location to have your A/C checked out today.

Thank you for your time. We hope this was helpful and have a great day!
