Whether snow is on the ground or the summer sun is beating down, it’s important to be prepared for roadside emergencies at any time of the year.

Accidents, breakdowns, or random weather events can happen anytime, leaving you stranded on the side of the road with your car. Sometimes emergency services are delayed or unreachable, so it’s important to be prepared.

Putting together a car emergency kit is a simple task that will pay off in the long run. To make it even easier, we’ve compiled a car emergency kit checklist to help you round up all the items you need.

Car Emergency Kit List

A car emergency kit is a collection of supplies that are helpful in an emergency—whether you have a flat tire or a dead car battery or are stuck in a snowdrift.

We recommend keeping a bag of items in the back of your car or an enclosed compartment so they are easily accessible in case of an emergency. A clear plastic tote lets you see what is inside, but a backpack or duffel may help keep everything organized.

There are many pre-assembled emergency car kits available to buy, but building your own lets you customize your safety kit and save money on things you don’t need.

Don’t worry—assembling a roadside emergency kit doesn’t have to be expensive. You probably already have most of the items listed below!

The Essentials

  • Flashlight/Headlamp – Consider purchasing a solar- and/or hand crank-powered flashlight so you don’t have to worry about dead batteries.
  • Blanket – Reflective emergency blankets are a great choice because they take up minimal space and can be used for shade in summer and warmth in winter.
  • Snacks – Pack non-perishable snacks like energy bars, nuts, jerky and dried fruit.
  • Water – The longer the trip, the more water you should pack. Plan to have at least one gallon of water per person.
  • First Aid Kit
  • Jumper Cables
  • Basic Tool Kit
  • Road Flares or Reflective Triangles
  • Waterproof Gloves
  • Sunscreen
  • Cell Phone Charger
  • Rain Ponchos
  • Pocket Knife/Multi-tool

We recommend setting a reminder on your calendar to go through your emergency kit every six months. Make sure batteries are working, refresh the water and snacks, and switch out items for the new season.

Winter Emergency Car Kit

In the winter, you’ll need to add a few more items to your kit to help in winter weather.

  • Ice Scraper/Snow Brush
  • Compact Metal Shovel
  • Blankets
  • Hats, Gloves and Socks
  • Bag of Kitty Litter – Even if you don’t have a cat, it’s smart to keep some kitty litter or sand in your car. It will help give your car more traction if you’re stuck in the snow.

Additional Items

If you plan to take an extended road trip, travel in remote areas, or expect severe weather during your drive, consider packing additional emergency supplies just in case.

  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Toilet Paper/Baby Wipes
  • Atlas
  • Emergency Radio
  • Duct Tape
  • Essential Car Fluids (oil, antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, etc.)
  • Plastic Tarp
  • Portable Air Compressor
  • Portable Jump Starter (make sure to keep it charged)
  • Extra Gas (stored in a no-spill gas can)
  • Tow Rope

When assembling your kit, keep in mind any special supplies your family may need and include them in your emergency kit (epinephrine injector pen, special medical equipment, pet food, etc.).

It’s also a good idea to keep emergency phone numbers, including family members, your auto insurance provider and a towing company*, in your phone.

In addition to having the items listed above, it’s important to prepare your vehicle for travel. Before hitting the road, be sure to do the following:

  • Fill up your gas tank
  • Check tire pressure
  • Check lights and windshield wipers
  • Confirm your defroster, heater and A/C are working

What should I do in an emergency?

If you get stuck or stranded, there are a few steps you can take to handle the situation safely and effectively.

  1. Stay calm: The worst thing you can do in an emergency situation is panic. Take slow, deep breaths and stay focused on what you can
  2. Check your surroundings: Even if you are pulled off to the side of the highway, it can be extremely dangerous to get out of your car. Make sure to check your surroundings before exiting your car. Drivers in oncoming traffic might not be able to see you, especially if weather conditions are poor.
If you can, move your vehicle to a safe area before exiting your vehicle. Once you can exit your vehicle, make sure to stand far away from traffic and never stand in front of your car.
  3. Put on your hazard lights: Turning your flashers on makes you more visible to drivers and any emergency personnel who might be looking for you.
  4. Call for help: Depending on the situation, call emergency services, a representative from your car insurance, a towing service or our Anytime Roadside Assistance program*. Then, make sure you notify a friend or family member of exactly where you are and what’s going on.
