What does my engine do?
Car engines are complex machines that transform fuel into power. It works in tandem with the other systems in your vehicle to send the power to the rest of the car and keep you rolling.
Depending on the type of engine your car has, it will have between two and 12 cylinders in the engine. The more cylinders your car has, the more power it can create. Each cylinder has a piston that moves up and down inside it. The piston’s movement is powered by a four-stroke cycle—intake, compression, power and exhaust.
First, air and fuel come into the cylinder combustion chamber as the piston moves down. As the piston comes back up, it compresses the air-fuel mixture. Next, the spark plug ignites the mixture, causing a mini explosion that pushes the piston back down. Finally, the piston pushes back up, forcing the exhaust gases out of the cylinder.
Now imagine that process happening thousands of times per minute in all the cylinders in the engine, with other engine components making sure everything happens in a timed, orderly way. It’s no wonder, then, that one minor malfunction could cause a major engine failure.
What does the Check Engine Light mean?
Cars manufactured after the mid-1990s have on-board engine diagnostic equipment that communicates with electronic sensors all over your engine. If the sensors detect anything wrong with the engine, it sends a signal that activates the check engine light on your dashboard.
A check engine light can indicate many different issues ranging from a loose gas cap to frayed wires or belts to serious engine failure. But if your check engine light is on, don’t panic! Our engine repair experts have the tools and training needed to find out if your check engine light is a quick fix or the sign of a larger issue.
Is your check engine light off, but something still seems wrong? Our experts will conduct a thorough engine diagnostic check and let you know what’s going on.
