Building a Brand on Backlick: Virginia Tire & Auto Re-opens in Springfield

Virginia Tire & Auto Springfield.

Virginia Tire & Auto is increasing our presence in Springfield: we are re-opening our original 1960s era gasoline service station at 6620 Backlick Road as a modern Virginia Tire & Auto!

This re-opening has been many years in the making, in part because Springfield, Virginia, has such a special place in our hearts. Our ties to the corner of Backlick Road and Calamo Road date back to 1966. Now Springfield, a Revitalization District as designated by the Fairfax County Office of Community Revitalization, is going through a revitalization. We’re proud to support this effort and the local community by bringing a much improved business to a community we love — a community that has been so good to us through the years.

Our Deep Roots on Backlick Road

In 1966, Virginia Tire & Auto’s founder, Myron Boncarosky, worked as a rep for Texaco Oil Co, calling on Texaco service stations in the DC area. At that time, he trained the original Texaco dealer at the Backlick service station, known as “Backlick Texaco.” Myron started his own business in 1976, and shortly thereafter, Myron had the opportunity to acquire Backlick Texaco, opening his first location in Springfield. For the next several decades, he built a business in Springfield: developing relationships with customers, building trust, and getting to know the community. In the mid-1980s, Myron started maintaining nearby Calamo Street Park, which we have kept up for decades— enhancing landscaping, adding benches, and creating a cleaner, more vibrant gathering place for the community.

As things would have it, Texaco and Shell merged in Northern Virginia, and “Backlick Texaco” became “Backlick Shell.” We also acquired the adjacent Shell station, “Brookfield Plaza Shell,” leaving us with two adjacent Shell stations. At the same time, we were building our Virginia Tire & Auto brand throughout Northern Virginia. So in 2008, we built the existing Virginia Tire & Auto location on the site of the old Brookfield Plaza Shell (pictured below at 6626 Backlick Road):

We still sold gas at Backlick Shell and used the service station to support the adjacent Virginia Tire & Auto, but the service station building was aging.

In 2018, we began rebuilding the original Backlick Shell service station — adding another bay (six instead of five), 2,000 additional square feet, 18-foot ceilings, LED lights, and state-of-the-art equipment. We created a modern Springfield auto repair shop, built for a superior customer experience.

Now, the two properties stand side by side and operate together as Virginia Tire & Auto to better serve the community. See the map below for reference:
