The NoVa & DC area is known for its traffic and congestion. There is no sureway to prevent an accident but safe-driving practices can help! Virginia Tire and Auto offers these tips to keep in mind when driving:
Don’t drive distracted
The National Safety Council estimates that 1 in 4 accident in the U.S is caused by texting and driving. It’s not safe and also against the law in most states.
Accidents can also occur when drivers are occupied with eating, drinking, doing their make up etc. Remember, any activity that takes your attention or eyes off the road is dangerous.
Be alert and in control of your vehicle at all times.
Use your turn signal
The drivers around you aren’t psychic. Your turn signal communicates your intent to switch lanes. Give the drivers around you notice of your movement. No one wants to be inconvenienced with an accident.
Don’t drive tired
Driving while drowsy is dangerous and another leading cause of accidents throughout the country. If you are planning a road trip, be sure to take a break every few hours. Take a nap, stretch your legs, or get a snack. You’ll be surprised how much more refreshed and focused you feel.
Obey traffic laws
Pay attention to the speed limit in the area or highway you are on. Remember that red octagon that says STOP? Be sure to make a complete stop, wait 3 seconds, check for any hazards and proceed accordingly.
Georgetown, Old Town, Washington DC are all beautiful areas but there is a lot of intersections, crosswalks, congestion, bike lanes etc. Realize you cannot and should not go 50 through high traffic areas. Use caution, practice some patience and be alert.
Make sure you have good visibility
Dirty windows are difficult to see through. Wiper blades wear out over time. Check them every 3 months for cracks or wear. Additionally, keep your wiper fluid topped off.
To assist with visibility, walk around your vehicle periodically and check to see that all of your vehicle’s lights are in working order. This includes the headlights, taillights, hi beams and turn signals.
Be sure your tires are in good condition
Tires are a driver’s first defense when it comes to avoiding an accident. Worn tires make driving in rain, ice or snow more dangerous. Inspect your tires for uneven wear, cracks in the sidewall and keep them maintained with proper rotation, alignment and replacement.
Also, be sure to check the air pressure in your tires and keep them inflated at the manufacturer recommended PSI.
Keep your vehicle driving its best with proper service, repair & maintenance provided by Virginia Tire & Auto.
