Fall Season Car Maintenance Tips

Are you ready for the leaves to change color and pumpkin flavored EVERYTHING? Fall is almost among us and there are some helpful maintenance tips you should consider before the change in weather occurs.

Be proactive and prepare for the seasonal conditions in advance by following these recommendations:

  • Fix the brakes: Did your mechanic suggest you repair or replace your brakes during your last visit? Don’t procrastinate and end up with worn brakes on icy roads!
  • Get a battery check: If a battery is older than four years, it may not work well in cold weather. When in doubt, replace it.
  • Check filters, coolants and hoses: Make sure all filters (oil, gas and air) are in good condition. Check the coolant and thermostat to ensure proper engine warm-up, and make sure your heater and defroster work. You don’t want to be caught without a working heater in frigid weather!
  • Check your tires: Look for excessive wear (you can learn to check your tires tread with the ‘Coin Test’ by clicking HERE) and proper inflation. Cold weather does affect your tire pressure; so don’t be alarmed if your TPMS light turns on. Simply make sure to correct your air pressure to manufacturer recommend levels.
  • Put together an emergency kit: Include winter gloves, blankets, flares, a small shovel, sand or kitty litter, tire chains, a flashlight, non perishable snacks and water,
  • Window Preparation: Confirm that your front and rear windshield wipers and defrosters are in good shape and working effectively. Putting an ice scraper in your car is beneficial, so you have it before you need it!

Car maintenance helps avoid costly repairs and also ensures your safety. You know the quote “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today”, why wait until it’s icy and cold outside to prepare maintenance your car? It will be more reliable throughout the winter if properly cared for in the fall months.
