How Often Should You Change the Engine Air Filter?

Knowing when to replace your air filter is important because a clean air filter is imperative for the proper operation of a vehicle.

Virginia Tire & Auto recommends air filter replacement every 30,000 miles or every two years. If your commute consists of frequent stops or you regularly travel thru through an area undergoing construction you should consider replacing your air filter more frequently.

Here are some signs it maybe time to replace your vehicles air filter:

Jerky or Slower Than Usual Acceleration: If you notice that your vehicle doesn't accelerate as well as it used to, there’s a good chance that the air filter is not allowing enough air into your car’s engine. You also may notice jerky acceleration with the pressing of the gas pedal on your vehicle.

Unusual sounds: A dirty or clogged air filter often leads to many strange noises when the car is idling. Unusual sounds could be a sign that your car’s engine is not receiving adequate airflow

Dirty Filter: You can also visually inspect your engine’s air filter. It is easily accessible and you can refer to your Owner's Manual for direction. If the air filter contains a lot of dirt, debris or grease, then it’s time to change your air filter.

Changing your air filter is often an overlooked maintenance. If you don’t remember the last time you had your air filter changed, it’s probably a good time to consider having it done.

A clean air filter results in improved gas mileage, better acceleration, increased engine life, lower emissions and overall improved engine performance.
